Learning Tours

Our Learning Tours provide schools, homeschools, and youth groups with a look into the history of Fort Dodge as well as life in a pioneer town.  These tours are offered throughout the spring, summer, and fall and are based on the State Board of Education’s social studies standards.


$75 for all teachers, chaperones, bus drivers, and up to 30 students.

$2.50 for each additional student.

General Tour

Tour Length:  3 hours

This tour includes the entire museum.  Your students will experience our replica 1850s Fort and Front Street  Your group will also be able to choose from either our Drill Off game or our butter churning demonstration.

Dragoon Tour

Tour Length: 3 hours

This tour covers the replica 1850s Fort and covers the history of Fort Dodge from its early formation, to World War II.  The tour highlights notable Fort Dodge figures including our replica of the Cardiff Giant, the greatest hoax of the 19th Century!  Also included in the Dragoon tour is our Drill Off.  This is a “Simon Says” like game that teaches your students basic military commands and tests their listening abilities.

Frontier Life Tour

Tour Length: 3 hours

Students will visit Front Street and experience what school and home-life were like on the Frontier.  They will also learn about several types of businesses from that time.  Students will join in helping churn butter that they will be able to sample on a homemade biscuit.


Reservations:  Schools and Youth Groups interested in tours must make reservations beginning March 1, 2018.  To ensure your best possible experience, reservations must be make three weeks in advance.  Payment is due two weeks before tour date.

Cancellations:  After submitting your reservation, you may cancel within three (3) business days and you will not be charged a cancellation fee.  Any cancellations outside of this window are subject to a 100% cancellation fee.

Weather Cancellations:  When the National Weather Service has issued any “Severe Weather Warning” we will reschedule your visit.  If we cannot find a rescheduled date, all fees will be waived.

Groups:  In order to give you the best possible experience, tour groups will be limited to groups of 12.  While we hope to keep your students within their homeroom classes, some splitting up of these classes may be necessary.  To expedite this process, please arrange your groups before arrival.
